Merger plan: The CWEMD Board of Directors agreed to explore a plan to form a ward-wide community development corporation
at the June Board meeting. The proposed 17th Ward Community Development Corp. would combine the
functions of the Central West End Midtown and Forest Park Southeast
development corporations. The board also voted to support tax abatement for a new restaurant and nightclub on Lindell.

Hotel Indigo Opens: Michael and Steven Roberts, joined by Mayor Francis Slay,
Comptroller Darlene Green, 17th Ward Alderman Joe Roddy and other
dignitaries, cut the ribbon at the grand opening of Hotel Indigo in
the CWE Tuesday, June 30.

Good luck, Luke: Luke
Reven, the 17th Ward's super Neighborhood Stabilization Officer, will
soon leave St. Louis for a new job and home in Maryville, Missouri.
Please join us from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 18 at the Newstead
Tower Pub, 4353 Manchester in the Grove, as we thank Luke for his
service and dedication to the 17th Ward and wish him and his wife,
Michelle, well in their new life.

CWE Southeast SBD: Voters approved the renewal and expansion of the Central West End Southeast Special Business District by a margin of 69-31 percent in the general city election Tuesday, April 7. Joseph D. Roddy won re-election as 17th Ward Alderman, and Francis Slay won a third term as Mayor of St. Louis.

Taylor lights, Take 2: The Central West End Midtown Development Infrastructure Committee is
going back to the drawing board after St. Louis city officials nixed
its choice of pedestrian lighting fixture for the Taylor Avenue lighting project. The committee also agreed on funding for a list of infrastructure projects in the CWE South neighborhood.

Art as stimulus: CWE South painter Carol Carter is exhibiting a series of original watercolors at 6 North Coffee Company through May 30. The Stimulus Package Art Show features 33 small-scale paintings all under $100, targeted especially for art lovers who may be watching their pocketbooks in an uncertain economy.

Soy taste testers: The
Solae Co. is seeking volunteers to test soy-based foods at its world
headquarters in the Cortex life sciences district. Volunteers sample
foods created with soy, including hot dogs, beef patties, chicken, granola bars and pudding, and receive gift certificates to local stores and restaurants.

Public parking: The new parking garage at Nine North, on Euclid between Laclede and West Pine, is now open for business with 180 public parking spaces. The cost for parking is $2 for the first 30 minutes plus $1 per additional 30 minutes. The garage is named for longtime politico and former 17th Ward Alderman Joseph P. Roddy, late father of current 17th Ward Alderman Joseph D. Roddy.
Nine North: The Park East Lofts will now be called Nine North, as in its address, 9 North Euclid Ave. Opus says the reason behind the name change was to avoid confusion with its sister development, the Park East Tower. Condo owners will begin moving in in May, with Qdoba Mexican Grill and Jimmy John's Gourmet sandwiches opening in the retail space along Euclid.

Thumbs down: Saint Louis University has decided not to sell its property at the corner of Laclede and Vandeventer to developers for a proposal for student housing.

CWE Security Forum: Police Chief Dan Isom touted his vision for the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department and answered questions about crime in the Central West End at the CWE public security forum Wednesday, Feb. 25 at Schlafly Library. CWE Neighborhood Security Initiative Director James Partee also reported on the progress of the NSI.

Park planning: Plans are moving forward for two new parks, one
in Forest Park Southeast and one in the Central West End. The first
park will be located in the three acres between Newstead, Tower Grove,
Chouteau and I-64 in Forest Park Southeast, with the second park on
Taylor between Lindell and Maryland in the Central West End, formerly
home of the CWE Dog Park. The city recently finalized the purchase of
the two land parcels as part of the deal involving the long-term lease
of Hudlin Park to Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Two committees of
neighborhood residents are meeting with H3 Studio's John Hoal, an urban
planner who authored the master plan for Forest Park, to brainstorm
ideas for the parks. Design plans for the CWE Taylor Park were recently revealed, with a model of the park available for viewing at Shlafly Library, 225 N. Euclid.
OR Smoothie & Café: A new café specializing in wholesome, tasty food is now open in the Park East Tower in the CWE South. OR Smoothie & Café offers fresh fruit and veggie smoothies as well as healthy spring rolls, wraps, bowls, sandwiches, soups and salads. Owner Mai Truong opened the first OR (which stands for organic and original) in 2002 in Richmond Heights. The café uses organic produce and ingredients and healthy cooking methods – no microwaves allowed.

New CET Lab Building: The Center for Emerging Technologies released plans for a new
60,000-square-foot laboratory building and announced a $1 million
donation from Monsanto to help fund the project. Read more here.
Eugene Kilgen dies: The man who first led the charge for the revitalization of the neighborhoods around Washington University Medical Center has died. Eugene Kilgen, who served as executive director of Washington University Medical Center Redevelopment Corp for 23 years until his retirement in 2000, died Jan. 17, 2009, at the age of 71. Highway 40 shutdown: Interstate
64 – known to the rest of us as Highway 40 – is now closed from Kingshighway to Interstate 170 until the end of 2009, while
the newly revamped section of the interstate from I-170 to Ballas is now open after being shut down for a year.
While the switch has been fairly smooth, Forest Park Parkway and
Manchester are seeing heavy traffic, and Taylor, Vandeventer and other
local north-south streets are often clogged with cars during peak

Holiday spirit: A couple hundred 17th Ward peeps poured into the Gramophone for the 17th Ward Holiday Party Wednesday, Dec. 3, to kick off the season and honor community leaders and volunteers.

Hall Meeting: About 100 17th Ward residents came out to the Town Hall
Meeting Monday, Nov. 17, 2008 at the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club
in Forest Park Southeast. Representatives from local community
development corporations and Alderman Joe Roddy led discussions about
what's going on in the various neighborhoods of the 17th Ward.
CWE Neighborhood Security Initiative Director named: The Central West End Neighborhood Security Initiative, made up of the CWE Special Business Districts and Washington University Medical Center, has hired James Partee as the new NSI Director. Partee has been Chief of Police for the Moscow Mills Police Department since 2005 and has served with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, the St. Peters Police Department and the St. Louis County Police Department. In Stitches: Twenty budding stitchers recently tried their hand at quilting at Parkview Apartments, 4451 Forest Park Ave. In the eight-week class, instructor Jean Ameduri taught residents basic quilting techniques, guiding participants as they created their own quilting projects. New Medical Building: Barnes-Jewish Hospital is planning a new 100,000-300,000 square foot building at the northwest corner of Euclid and Forest Park Avenue. The building will provide space for medical offices in which doctors in training can see private patients. The new building, which will replace two existing buildings on the site, will extend to the alley on the south side of the Majestic diner. The building will be four to six stories high, with vertical expansion possible later and first floor retail. Parking will be in the Laclede Avenue garage.
Real Change: The Central West End Association and the City of St. Louis have announced the launch of the "Real Change" campaign. The goal of the campaign is to discourage the random giving of money to panhandlers while encouraging contributions to local social service providers. Click here to read more.
Return of Shriners: Shriners Hospital’s Board of Directors has endorsed moving back to the WUMC campus. The $170 million hospital will be built at 4400 Clayton between Taylor and Newstead. The move will allow the hospital, which provides free orthopedic care to children, better access to the School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital. Click here to read more.

Citywalk on Euclid: Mills Properties will soon begin construction on Citywalk on Euclid, a seven-story residential development with 188 units and first-floor retail. The project, located at Euclid and West Pine, will replace the Doctors Building. Click here to read more.
Park East Lofts: Opus Northwest has begun construction on the Park East Lofts, a six-story condominum building next door to its sister development, the Park East Tower. The project includes a public parking garage with 179 spaces. Click here to read more.
