CWE Midtown Development’s Development Committee granted preliminary support for a proposed four-story, 135-unit student housing complex at the southeast corner of Laclede and Vandeventer at its December meeting. The site is currently home to the Laclede Street Bar & Grill and a parking lot owned by Saint Louis University.
The $40 million, 176,000 square-foot project includes a five-story, 408-space parking garage behind the building, a central courtyard and 11,000 square feet of retail along Vandeventer. The one- and two-bedroom suites range from 624 to 1,070 square feet and would accommodate two students in each bedroom. If approved, the project is expected to be ready for SLU students by fall 2010.
The developers,
Campus Apartments of Philadelphia, Pa., currently manage student housing around the country. The project is designed by
Cube 3 Studio of Lawrence, Mass. Tax abatement is being requested from the city.
The CWEMD Development Committee voted unanimously to recommend conditional support for the project, contingent on reviewing detailed plans for lighting, security and streetscape improvements. Committee members also encouraged developers to seek LEED certification.
The CWEMD Board of Directors will vote on the project at its December meeting. The organization's recommendation will then be passed on to the Alderman and the City of St. Louis.

- BJC Resident Clinic Building: Plans are evolving for a resident clinic building to replace the Ettrick and the adjacent building to the north at the northwest corner of Euclid and Forest Park Ave.
- Citywalk: Bruce Mills says he expects to begin construction next year on Citywalk at the northeast corner of Euclid and West Pine.
- Park East Lofts: Opus expects to complete the Park East Lofts near Euclid and Laclede by late spring 2009.
- Melrose: The renovation of the Melrose Building at the northeastern corner of Sarah and West Pine is expected to be completed by February 2009.
- McDonald's on Lindell: The new McDonald's has been completed at 4006 Lindell. The developers agreed to forgo a planned driveway in front of the building for green space with pedestrian access.
