CWEMD becomes Park Central Development:  Central West End Midtown Development has adopted a new service area – and a new name to go along with it: Park Central Development Corp.  The boundaries of the newly minted Park Central Development have expanded to include the entire 17th Ward, including all of Forest Park Southeast, Botanical Heights, the southern part of the Central West End, and parts of Midtown, Tiffany, Shaw, Kings Oak and Cheltenham. The new name reflects the relationship of these neighborhoods to Forest Park, Tower Grove Park, and the Botanical Garden, as well as smaller community parks.

Central West End's Security Forum: Come join us at the Schlafly Public Library (225 N Euclid) on Wednesday, February 24 at 5:45 PM for an important neighborhood security forum.  The 2009 Crime Report of the Central West End will be discussed and special prosecutor Bryan Sanger will give a presentation.

17th Ward Holiday Party: More than 200 guests brought in the season and toasted the 2009 community award winners at 17th Ward Holiday Party at the brand-new Library Annex in the Spring Street Lofts. Check back soon for photos!

Who made the list?


Au revoir, Chez Léon: Local celeb chef Gerard Craft will open Brasserie by Niche in the spot previously known as Chez Léon. The restaurant will stick with French bistro-inspired fare, although both the menu and the décor – inside and out – are getting an update.

CWE Sustainable Development Plan: Building heights, setbacks and uses were the focus of the second public workshop for the Central West End Sustainable Development Plan and Code on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Schlafly Library. More than 50 people viewed a presentation led by John Hoal of H3 Studio and then met in small groups to discuss and provide feedback on the aspects of the plan.

CVS pharmacy:
After CVS representatives presented a revised proposal for a pharmacy on the corner of Lindell and Sarah, members of the West Pine-Laclede Neighborhood Association voted at their September meeting to continue discussions with the pharmacy.  The association had voted to reject an earlier CVS proposal at the August meeting.

Nine NorthCity Talk: About 125 neighbors and friends of the 17th Ward gathered on Nine North's urban garden patio for 17th Ward City Talk Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009. Alderman Joe Roddy hosted the event, which was sponsored by CWE Midtown Development and Forest Park Southeast Development Corp. Joseph Downs of Opus Northwest, developers of Nine North and the Park East Tower, talked about Opus' investment in the CWE. The event was catered by Wild Flower restaurant.

Midtown hotel proposal: Central West End Midtown Development's Development Committee has signaled tentative conditional support for a five-story, 100-room hotel on Forest Park Avenue in Midtown. The new hotel, to be developed and managed by Sasak Corp. under the Holiday Inn Express & Suites flagship, would replace the former Raffie Vending Co. warehouse located at 3663 Forest Park Ave. between Spring and Grand.

New BJC building: BJC is planning a 12-story outpatient clinic and office building at the northwest corner of Euclid and Forest Park Avenue. The building, which will replace the Ettrick Building at 4901-05 Forest Park as well as the building just to the north at 3-17 S. Euclid, will include ground-floor retail along Euclid. BJC also plans to demolish the former Schoenberg Nursing School at 4949 Forest Park between the parking garage and the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church for a staging area, which will be turned into a park after construction is completed. The block is located in the 28th Ward, but bordered by the 17th Ward on Forest Park Avenue, Euclid and Laclede.

Sauce Awards: Congratulations to the 17th Ward establishments named in the 2009 Sauce Magazine Readers' Choice Awards.
Who made the list?

Merger plan: The CWEMD Board of Directors agreed to explore a plan to form a ward-wide community development corporation at the June Board meeting. The proposed 17th Ward Community Development Corp. would combine the functions of the Central West End Midtown and Forest Park Southeast development corporations. The board also voted to support tax abatement for a new restaurant and nightclub on Lindell.

CWE Southeast SBD: Voters approved the renewal and expansion of the Central West End Southeast Special Business District by a margin of 69-31 percent in the general city election Tuesday, April 7. Joseph D. Roddy won re-election as 17th Ward Alderman, and Francis Slay won a third term as Mayor of St. Louis.

Public parking:
The new parking garage at Nine North, on Euclid between Laclede and West Pine, is now open for business with 180 public parking spaces. The cost for parking is $2 for the first 30 minutes plus $1 per additional 30 minutes. The garage is named for longtime politico and former 17th Ward Alderman Joseph P. Roddy, late father of current 17th Ward Alderman Joseph D. Roddy.


Nine NorthNine North: The Park East Lofts will now be called Nine North, as in its address, 9 North Euclid Ave. Opus says the reason behind the name change was to avoid confusion with its sister development, the Park East Tower. Condo owners will begin moving in in May, with Qdoba Mexican Grill and Jimmy John's Gourmet sandwiches opening in the retail space along Euclid.

Park planning: Plans are moving forward for two new parks, one in Forest Park Southeast and one in the Central West End. The first park will be located in the three acres between Newstead, Tower Grove, Chouteau and I-64 in Forest Park Southeast, with the second park on Taylor between Lindell and Maryland in the Central West End, formerly home of the CWE Dog Park. The city recently finalized the purchase of the two land parcels as part of the deal involving the long-term lease of Hudlin Park to Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Two committees of neighborhood residents are meeting with H3 Studio's John Hoal, an urban planner who authored the master plan for Forest Park, to brainstorm ideas for the parks. Design plans for the CWE Taylor Park were recently revealed, with a model of the park available for viewing at Shlafly Library, 225 N. Euclid.

OR Smoothie & Café: A new café specializing in wholesome, tasty food is now open in the Park East Tower in the CWE South. OR Smoothie & Café offers fresh fruit and veggie smoothies as well as healthy spring rolls, wraps, bowls, sandwiches, soups and salads. Owner Mai Truong opened the first OR (which stands for organic and original) in 2002 in Richmond Heights. The café uses organic produce and ingredients and healthy cooking methods – no microwaves allowed.

New CET Lab Building: The Center for Emerging Technologies released plans for a new 60,000-square-foot laboratory building and announced a $1 million donation from Monsanto to help fund the project. Read more

New Medical Building: Barnes-Jewish Hospital is planning a new 100,000-300,000 square foot building at the northwest corner of Euclid and Forest Park Avenue. The building will provide space for medical offices in which doctors in training can see private patients. The new building, which will replace two existing buildings on the site, will extend to the alley on the south side of the Majestic diner. The building will be four to six stories high, with vertical expansion possible later and first floor retail. Parking will be in the Laclede Avenue garage.

Real Change: The Central West End Association and the City of St. Louis have announced the launch of the "Real Change" campaign. The goal of the campaign is to discourage the random giving of money to panhandlers while encouraging contributions to local social service providers. Read more

Shriners HospitalReturn of Shriners: Shriners Hospital’s Board of Directors has endorsed moving back to the WUMC campus. The $170 million hospital will be built at 4400 Clayton between Taylor and Newstead. The move will allow the hospital, which provides free orthopedic care to children, better access to the School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital. Read more.

Citywalk on Euclid: Mills Properties will soon begin construction on Citywalk on Euclid, a seven-story residential development with 188 units and first-floor retail. The project, located at Euclid and West Pine, will replace the Doctors Building. Read more
