Blacks in Science

More than 300 scientists, engineers, teachers and students celebrated the second annual Blacks in Science Day Saturday, Feb.23, 2008 at the Saint Louis Science Center. Forest Park Southeast Development Corp. and the Science Center co-sponsored the all-day event, which honors the achievements of African Americans in science.

Speakers included Dr. Toni Hoover of Pfizer Global Research and Development, the evening's keynote speaker; Dr. Sam Waters of the University of Missouri-Columbia; and Rod Nunn of Jefferson City. Entertainment was provided by In the Mood. Arnold W. Donald of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation servied as the honorary program chair.

Blacks in Science seeks to expose African American and disadvantaged youth to the wonders of science and encourage them to pursue careers in science, engineering and math. Proceeds from the event benefit youth programs for African American and disadvanted youths and scholarships in the science field.

The "Education is the Key" scholarship at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park provides opportunities for area students to advance their education. The annual Halloween Masquerade Party for area children, held at the Science Center and sponsored by Forest Park Development Corp., raises funds for the scholarship.
